Waymap

In 2022, ARL and Waymap, an audio navigation app designed to empower people with visual impairments to travel independently, undertook a trial with ten blind volunteers. The success was recognised at the British Quality Foundation Excellence Awards, winning the Excellence in Innovation award.

  • 100% of participants said they would be somewhat or much more likely to use public transport if Waymap was available.
  • 90% said they would be very confident or quite confident finding their way around a public place they were not familiar with using Waymap.
  • 80% said they would be somewhat or a lot more inclined to travel on their own if Waymap was available.

Luna

ARL trialled an innovative solution, Luna, in 2024 to help British Sign Language (BSL) users access essential information whilst travelling on the London Overground network. The trial was in collaboration with GoMedia.

Luna translates digital information listed online into BSL and transmits it directly to the user through their smart device via a personalised digital signer.

  • 91.3% of all users would like to have Luna always available whilst travelling.
  • 87.5% of all users would recommend Luna to someone else.
  • 86.7% of people with hearing impairment would be able to travel more independently with Luna.
